Leiomyosarcoma Dictionary

apoptosis: A process during which damaged cells kill themselves so they don't reproduce a whole line of damaged cells.
 
cancer: A disease characterized by a population of cells that grow and divide without respect to normal limits, invade and destroy adjacent tissues, and may spread to distant anatomic sites through a process called metastasis.
 
cartilage: A soft tissue of the body; a possible site of leiomyosarcoma.

cuteaneus leiomyosarcoma: Commonly located on the extensor surfaces of the extremities, particularly lower legs. Rarely these may occur on the scalp, upper lips, nipple and scrotum. There is usually no evidence of metastasis.

dermal leiomyosarcoma: Demonstrates an irregular outline. The tumor cells blend into surrounding collagenous stroma. A superficial grenz zone may be present. The tumor is usually located in the dermis but may extend into the subcutis. The overlying epidermis shows some flattening of the rete ridges.
 
en bloc: A tumor in one piece; these are the easiest tumors to remove.
 
epstein-barr virus (EBV): A member of the herpes virus family and one of the most common human viruses. It has been associated with the development of soft tissue sarcoma in smooth muscles throughout the body.
 
excision: Surgical removal of a tumor.
